Tree.pdf explores the digital deconstruction of a natural object - a tree - transforming it from a static,
physical entity into a synthetic, pixelated form reminiscent of the digital world. The work combines a 3D replica with documentation of its live installation, emphasizing the tension between materiality and digital simulation.

The immersive soundscape is generated through a live synthesizer performance, in which the artist sampled natural sounds and processed them through synthesizer filters. The instrument is programmed to continue evolving the sounds autonomously, creating a dynamic auditory environment that parallels the visual deconstruction.

The piece reflects on the dystopian aspects of human technological development, a concern rooted in the artist’s experience growing up during the 2000s tech boom. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of AI, our engagement with digital and computational worlds often feels dystopian. Through the sculpture and sound, Bazian envisions a transformation: the disassembly of a natural object into digital form becomes an immersive, utopian experience, offering a space for reflection, reconnection, and reimagining the digital as a source of poetic possibility.

The artwork revisits the Soviet period, the time when the artist’s mother grew up and explores how Russian culture and stories became deeply rooted in the lives of the “one-and-a-half generation” of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Through this portrait, the artist reflects on the tension between a familiar cultural identity and the very different reality of life in Israel.

In her work, the artist takes on her mother’s identity, the same identity her mother tried to leave behind when she moved to Israel. By doing so, she explores her own feelings of alienation as the daughter of immigrants. Living in Israel, she feels that her reality does not fully match her inner sense of self, much like her mother once felt out of place in Russia.

The artwork raises questions about belonging, memory, and identity across generations, and expresses the artist’s ongoing search for connection and a sense of home within a complex cultural world.
